Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Q&A

What is transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)?

TMS is a noninvasive treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate underactive areas of your brain. The pulses boost nerve activity in a precise area of your brain, which in turn increases neurotransmitter levels. Your symptoms improve as TMS restores normal brain activity.

What conditions may improve with TMS?

Many mental health and physical conditions are associated with dysfunctional brain activity. Brain imaging and electroencephalograms, which show the electrical activity inside the brain, reveal the specific area of the brain that’s underactive in each condition.

TMS may help improve conditions like:

  • Major depression
  • Treatment-resistant depression
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Drug addiction
  • Alcoholism
  • OCD
  • PTSD
  • Chronic pain
  • Tinnitus

Patients who have depression and other symptoms due to chronic post-concussion syndrome may also improve with TMS.

How does Nexstim SmartFocus TMS improve my treatment?

The team at BrainStim Centers, Inc. performs TMS using the Nexstim system because it delivers customized and consistent treatment.

Your TMS therapy begins with an MRI of your brain, which the Nexstim turns into a detailed 3D image. Your 3D image accurately reveals the underactive area of your brain.

After your personalized information is programmed into the Nexstim system, every TMS treatment you receive precisely treats that area without negatively impacting any other part of your brain. In fact, studies suggest it may increase cognitive abilities.

The Nexstim smart focus technology contains a painless infrared tracker that follows the movement of your head, allowing the computer to adjust in real-time and keep your treatment accurate.

What happens during TMS treatment?

When you receive TMS treatment, all you need to do is relax in a reclining chair. Once you’re comfortable, your personal TMS technicians will position a wand-like coil gently against your head.

The coil gently rests against your head over the area being treated. However, you won’t feel any weight or pressure.

The technician will also place small electrodes on your hand. The electrodes detect muscle movement, used to determine the optimal intensity for your TMS.

When the Nexstim device is started, the coil produces magnetic pulses. You will hear a click and may feel a light tingling on your scalp every time a pulse goes out.

How long will I receive TMS?

The initial TMS treatment for most patients includes five sessions each week. The duration depends on your personal medical assessment. Optimal and long-lasting results are generally seen with consistent treatment.

Each session time will vary. However, the first session typically takes around 45 minutes to load the MRI and conduct the brain navigation. This data will be saved in the computer and subsequent visits typically take 20 minutes from start to finish. Since TMS doesn't negatively impact your cognitive abilities, you can expect to go back to your daily routine.
