PTSD Q&A

What causes PTSD?

PTSD occurs after you experience or witness a dangerous event. You may also develop PTSD after a family member or friend tells you about a traumatic event they experienced.

The types of events that most often result in PTSD include:

  • Combat duty
  • Gun violence
  • Robbery
  • Severe accident
  • Sexual or physical assault
  • Natural or manmade disaster
  • Death of a loved one

Everyone has residual feelings of fear and anxiety after a traumatic or dangerous incident but those feelings typically get better. If your symptoms last longer than a month or you continue to feel anxious even when you’re not in a dangerous situation, you may have PTSD.

What symptoms develop if I have PTSD?

The symptoms caused by PTSD create significant anxiety and they’re severe enough to affect your daily life, making it hard to socialize or go to work.

When you have PTSD, symptoms may include:

  • Having flashbacks or dreams about the event
  • Feeling irritable or angry
  • Being easily startled
  • Feeling depressed
  • Having insomnia
  • Blaming yourself for the incident

You may also avoid the places or people that remind you of the event. If you have these symptoms and they have persisted over a long period of time without improvement, with or without medications, contact the team at BrainStim Centers, Inc. to see if you are a candidate for TMS treatment.

How is PTSD treated?

The team at BrainStim Centers, Inc. uses Nexstim SmartFocus® TMS technology, a state-of-the-art device that uses 3D brain imaging to identify the exact area of the brain to treat.

During the TMS treatment, the Nexstim device precisely identifies that area of your brain and transmits electromagnetic pulses safely through your skull and into the area.

The electromagnetic energy then increases nerve activity, which restores neurotransmitter levels and improves your anxiety symptoms.

How does TMS treat PTSD?

Brain scans of people diagnosed with PTSD reveal that the trauma affects nerve activity in certain areas of the brain. TMS treats PTSD by restoring normal nerve function in the disrupted area.

The team at BrainStim Centers, Inc. performs TMS using Nexstim SmartFocus® TMS technology. Before your TMS treatment, Nexstim builds a 3D image of your brain based on an MRI scan.

Your 3D image shows the exact area of your brain that’s underperforming. The Nexstim transmits painless magnetic pulses that travel safely through your skull to stimulate those neurons without affecting any other part of your brain. As nerve activity improves, levels of brain chemicals are restored and your PTSD symptoms can improve.

Each session time varies. However, the first session typically takes 45 minutes to load the MRI and conduct brain navigation. This data will be saved in the computer for future reference. Subsequent visits typically take 20 minutes from start to finish. Since TMS doesn’t negatively impact your cognitive abilities, you can leave as soon as the session is over and go back to your daily routine.
