What is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is associated with overactivity in the inner and outer ears. According to the American Tinnitus Association, Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no actual external noise is present. And tinnitus can be both acute (temporary) and chronic (long-term). Common symptoms include:

Tinnitus is subjective, and each person may experience it in their own way. Some cases of tinnitus are debilitating and life-altering, while some are manageable.

What Causes Tinnitus?

Many patients learn they don’t have a physical problem that explains the ringing in their ears. For others, tinnitus is the symptom of an underlying problem, such as

You may also develop tinnitus from taking certain medications. Plus, stress and tinnitus share a two-way connection: stress may cause tinnitus, and having tinnitus frequently leads to stress and anxiety.

How is Tinnitus Treated?

Brain scans performed on patients with ringing in their ears show an association of tinnitus with hyperactive nerve activity in a specific part of the brain. That’s why MeRT can be an effective treatment.

MeRT is a non-invasive treatment that sends magnetic pulses safely through your scalp and into a precisely controlled area of your brain. These pulses stimulate nerve cells, improving the balance of brain chemicals and restoring normal brain function. In treating tinnitus, MeRT delivers electromagnetic pulses to the targeted areas. As a result, this treatment can reduce the severity and perception of tinnitus.

You Don’t Have to Decide Right Away

Take the easy Steps to Determine if MeRT is the Right Treatment

We understand you may not feel certain whether MeRT is the right treatment for you or your loved one. MeRT is a relatively new, innovative treatment, and you may not have heard as much about it yet. However, this is not a decision that you need to make right away.

That’s why your first step needs to be a simple one: a phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. During this call, you can discuss symptoms and history, ask questions, and have her explain the protocols, fees, and treatment details.

Initial Testing and Analysis

Then, if you are interested in taking the next step, we can set up an appointment for an EEG (a simple, non-invasive brain scan) and a second appointment for a consultation with our clinician.

Once the EEG and other testing have been done and before your consultation, neurosurgeon Dr. Mark Liker, our Medical Director, will thoroughly review your test results and determine if you may benefit from MeRT and the exact treatment plan for the best possible results.

Once we have analyzed the test results, you will have a one-on-one consultation with our clinician to discuss the results and details of the treatment plan. You can either attend this appointment in person or, if you wish, you can attend virtually.

During this time, you will discuss your symptoms and the treatment protocols with you. You can also ask further questions so that together, you can determine if you are a candidate for treatment.

Assessment Period

If you and the clinician both determine that MeRT may be the right treatment, the next step is an Assessment Period. This entails a short period of treatment, followed by a new EEG, to see if you are responding to the treatment.

We assess this based on the new EEG results, as well as symptom improvements. If there is a positive response to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements. At that point, we can schedule the rest of the treatment.

So, as you can see, there are many steps involved in ensuring that you receive the treatment that will benefit you.
