TMS (MeRT) Therapy for Brain Injury in Valencia & Calabasas, CA

Non-invasive, No-medication treatment for Traumatic Brain Injury offers a new lease on life!

Traumatic Brain Injuries and Concussions

If you’ve experienced a traumatic brain injury or concussion, then you know how miserable the symptoms can be: headaches, dizziness, nausea, and memory problems can be unbearable.

With a mild concussion, these symptoms can often resolve. But when the traumatic brain injury is more severe, the symptoms are far more debilitating. And they don’t go away, despite treatment.

That’s why we offer a new solution at BrainStim Centers, one that’s helped thousands overcome the painful, overpowering symptoms of traumatic brain injury.

It’s called MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy. In essence, MeRT uses a magnetic field to stimulate and balance brain function, guided by sophisticated imaging and diagnostics.

The MeRT Approach to Traumatic Brain Injury or Concussion

MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, is a cutting-edge treatment that combines Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Quantitative Electroencephalogram (qEEG), and Electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG). Using this combination of technologies, we can analyze and design treatments tailored to each patient’s unique brain pattern.

Simply stated, we use magnetic waves to stimulate specifically targeted areas of the brain found not to be communicating or functioning optimally. We can then devise a highly personalized protocol for each patient to encourage improved brain communication.

Additionally, after the initial recovery, MeRT can stimulate and assist the brain in improving connectivity and communication. And in many cases, this has greatly improved recovery results. *

*Results are based on strict observation of our protocols and vary from patient to patient. Results are not guaranteed.

What is Traumatic Brain Injury?

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) defines TBI, or Traumatic Brain Injury, as “an injury that affects how the brain works. It may be caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head, or penetrating injury (such as from a gunshot) to the head.”

And TBIs can be mild, moderate, or severe. When looking at the mild end of the concussion spectrum, the Mayo Clinic defines a mild TBI or concussion as “a traumatic brain injury that affects your brain function. Effects are usually temporary but can include headaches and problems with concentration, memory, balance, and coordination.”

However, while a TBI may be medically referred to as “mild” since it’s not life-threatening, the results can be anything but mild. When your head suddenly hits an object or when it moves violently back and forth (such as in a car accident), your brain can bounce around or twist in the skull. This can also cause chemical changes in your brain or brain cell damage. And these changes may last a lifetime.

Then there are the more serious injuries, such as a moderate or severe TBI. These may lead to lifelong health problems that may affect all aspects of a person’s life. People with severe TBI must be hospitalized, sometimes long-term. Additionally, they may need rehabilitation for memory, learning, coordination, speech, and other senses.

Symptoms of a Concussion or TBI

Some of the more common symptoms that can occur with a traumatic brain injury or concussion include:

These symptoms can vary based on the severity of the TBI. However, no matter the severity, if left untreated, a traumatic brain injury can lead to a shortened life span and significant complications.

Meet our Medical Director

World-renowned Neurosurgeon Mark Liker, MD, FAANS, FACS, is the founder and CEO of BrainStim Centers, Inc., with clinics located in Calabasas and Valencia, California. “Our mission is to provide a professional & honest approach to health care”

Dr. Liker expects the highest standard of care and equipment not only in his private practice but in his TMS and MeRT Clinics as well.

As a neurosurgeon, I recognize that the accuracy of my equipment means the difference between an effective and ineffective treatment. Our patients rely on this as well. Many have relied on either medication or therapy. However, MeRT, or Magnetic e-Resonance Therapy, offers an innovative, non-invasive option to target critical brain pathways associated with a variety of diseases.”

“The brain seems to be responding to these injuries in the same way…”

“What we’re finding is that the brain responds to insult the same way, whether it’s chronic sleep deprivation, whether it’s the mechanical injury of head-to-head contact repeatedly on a football field, or whether it’s being exposed to repeated blast injuries in the military or just direct contact with IEDs. The brain seems to be responding to these injuries the same way. …

“For so many years now, there’s been this feeling of helplessness that concussions are just a fact of life and there’s not a lot that we can do.

Dr. Erik Won, President of Wave Neuroscience, from his appearance on the Broken Brain podcast

46 specialists, 29 treatments, 40 medications—nothing helped. Then he tried MeRT.

David was diagnosed with TBI in 2011. He had become entirely unable to help his wife care for their home or their two young children, and he was desperate. So, for the next five years, David saw 46 specialists: neurologists, psychologists, pain management specialists, orthopedic doctors, chiropractors, and physical therapists.

Overall, he had 29 different treatments, from physical therapy to sensory deprivation tanks, meditation to biofeedback, and more. And doctors prescribed him a multitude of different medications and supplements, and he eventually ended up with a drug addiction problem.

While some of these approaches helped, David was still far from recovering his quality of life. Then he discovered MeRT, and you can read what he had to say about what happened from there.

Everything changed when I started treatment. Within two weeks, I was sleeping better. I was off all 12 of the meds I was on when I began treatment, and I was starting to enjoy life again. After the first month, I was socializing with people again, I was able to work out for the first time in years, and I started to help my wife with the bills and our budget. As I write this, I just completed my sixth week of treatment. A conservative estimate is that I have had a 60–70% reduction of the symptoms I listed above and have a whole new lease on life. I can focus, I feel good about myself, I feel confident, and I laugh again. Most importantly, I can feel the love for and from my family again.”

How do you know…

Is MeRT the Right Treatment?

It’s difficult to know, just from reading this, if MeRT is the right treatment for your child. Because we understand this, we know that your first step needs to be a simple one: a phone consultation with our New Patient Coordinator. During this call, you can discuss symptoms and history, ask questions, and have her explain the protocols, fees, and treatment details.

Initial Testing and Analysis

Then, if you are interested in taking the next step, we can set up an appointment for an EEG (a simple, non-invasive brain scan) and a second appointment for a consultation with our clinician.

Once the EEG and other testing have been done and before your consultation, neurosurgeon Dr. Mark Liker, our Medical Director, will thoroughly review your test results and determine if you may benefit from MeRT and the exact treatment plan for the best possible results.

Once we have analyzed the test results, you will have a one-on-one consultation with our clinician to discuss the results and details of the treatment plan. You can either attend this appointment in person or, if you wish, you can attend virtually.

During this time, you will discuss your symptoms and the treatment protocols with you. You can also ask further questions so that together, you can determine if you are a candidate for treatment.

Assessment Period

If you and the clinician both determine that MeRT may be the right treatment, the next step is an Assessment Period. This entails a short period of treatment, followed by a new EEG, to see if you are responding to the treatment.

We assess this based on the new EEG results, as well as symptom improvements. If there is a positive response to treatment during the assessment period, you will have likely noticed some improvements. At that point, we can schedule the rest of the treatment.

So, as you can see, there are many steps involved in ensuring that you receive the treatment that will benefit you.
